SYN project: Young people and the Internet

The following three packages were produced for a SYN and Telstra funded project on young people and the internet. The packages were also presented live over two half-hour specials on SYN (90.7)

'Young electronic artists and their rights Online'

This package explored how young electronic artists protect the rights to their music online. It addressed the sort of things artists are doing to protect their music and also dealt with some of their confusion about their rights online. I spoke to two young electronic artists, Chris Donaldson from Neon Knights and Yama Indra from G.L.O.V.E.S and Damn Arms. I also spoke to Steve Scully from an online music blog and Sabiene Heindl of Music Industry Piracy Investigations to get a wider perspective on the issue

'Young people, privacy and the media in social networks.'

This package examined the media's use of images taken from to social networks like myspace or facebook for their news stories. I spoke to a couple of myspace and facebook users, IT Law researcher Dr Dan Svantesson from Bond University and Renee Barnes a journalist and a lecturer at RMIT about the issue.

The Night Air: individual montage

This montage was created for ABC Radio National's 'The Night Air.' The Night Air is a highly experimental program, featuring remixed and sampled sound, interviews and music. This montage became part of a 30 minute montage on the theme of isolation and journey that will be broadcast on the ABC in late November 2008.

It is based on the Nullarbor, the vast stretch of plain between Adelaide and Perth. I used a range of sounds, music and audio grabs to attempt to capture the beauty and danger of the landscape.

In the final mix the piece was dissected into two halves, to give the 30 minute montage a sense of structure. For the purposes of this show reel I have reconnected the piece.

Tomas Ford

As the 'EP,' of Indie-Electro night I often get a chance to organize and conduct interviews for the night (every Monday 8pm-2am on SYN 90.7 FM)

I interviewed Tomas Ford for Indie-Electro night while he was visiting Melbourne (from Canberra) for a series of shows. An electro-punk artisr, Ford had a really interesting view of performance and music creation. The original interview went for 40 minutes, which I eventually was able to cut down to roughly 8 minutes.

about step's show reel

this a blog dedicated entirely to work of RMIT Media graduate Stephanie Powell. It is deigned to showcase all the pieces I have created (both individually and with others.)

I am a recent graduate of the Media degree at RMIT University in Melbourne. I majored in radio and Asian Media studies. During this time I created work for community broadcasted triple R and for ABC radio national's "The Night Air." Included in this blog are also radio documentaries, features and dramas that were created as part of my course.
